Here's a pop cultural confluence that only comes along once in an eon... Not content with grabbing our attention for years on TV screens with Game Of Thrones, TV writer/producers David Benioff and DB Weiss have now been handed the keys to an even bigger playground: they'll work on new Star Wars movies for Lucasfilm.

To be clear, this is not the trilogy that The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson is cooking up, nor will it follow the Skywalker line. It's an entirely independent story that will explore its own corner of that galaxy far, far away. Where people die a lot, one assumes. (Yes, yes, we know that's more George R.R. Martin's thing).

"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today," said Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy in a statement announcing the hiring. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

"In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since," Benioff and Weiss enthused. "We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game Of Thrones is complete."

While they had been planning to oversee spin-offs from Thrones, they can likely juggle that with their Star Wars duties, though we predict this means that their other planned follow-up to the fantasy series, controversial slavery drama Confederate will either be handed off to someone else to run for HBO or will quietly wither on the vine. Which might be best for all involved...

As for Star Wars, it's yet more evidence that Disney and Lucasfilm are aiming to make movies set in the universe for the next 25,000 years. But when you've got proven writers such as these two in charge, it does instill some confidence.
