He's had a little experience soaring through space (and time), but now former TARDIS occupant Matt Smith is headed to the galaxy far, far away. The actor has joined Star Wars Episode IX in a mysterious "key" role.

As to what side he'll be taking in the struggle between the Resistance and the First Order, no one knows, as co-writer/director JJ Abrams is naturally staying silent on the details.

The new movie is now in production, with the cast including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson and Mark Hamill all back, plus new Wars recruits Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan and Naomi Ackie. There will also be some presence for Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, thanks to unused footage from The Force Awakens.

Whatever it ends up being called, Episode IX will soar into UK cinemas on 19 December next year and our guide to the movie is right here. Smith will be seen in Charles Manson drama Charlie Says, Mapplethorpe and Patient Zero, none of which have confirmed UK release dates.
