There has been plenty of positive buzz about Sony's new animated, Marvel-adjacent adventure Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. And the studio is clearly enthusiastic too, as it has already started finding people to work on both a sequel and a spin-off.

With just a couple of weeks left until Spider-Verse is loosed upon the wider world, with its story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a Spidey living and hero-ing in an alternate universe meeting some of his fellow web-slinging types and teaming up to save all their realities from a nefarious, cross-dimensional scheme.

Sony has hired Avatar: The Last Airbender TV/DC video 'toon veteran Joaquim Dos Santos to direct the follow-up, which has its plot details naturally shrouded in mystery for now but will be hinted at in the first film.

Then there's the even more nebulous spin-off, with The Hollywood Reporter hearing that Lauren Montgomery, who has worked on Voltron and, like De Santos, with the DC animation team, is making a deal to tackle the spin-off, a female character-focused story likely anchored by Hailee Steinfeld's Spider-Gwen. Bek Smith, a writer on US TV series Zoo, is on script duty for that one.

And while they've yet to formally commit, we'd expect Spider-Verse writers and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller to be at least involved in helping the new filmmaking teams.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse itself swings into cinemas on 12 December, and you can see the latest trailer right here.
