Original Title:

Trembling Before G-D

A documentary about gay ultra-Orthodox Jews struggling to come to terms with their sexual preferences may sound like grim viewing, but Dubowski's stunning film rarely depresses.

Instead it strikes a balance of devastating and surprisingly funny moments, while offering a peek into a rarely-seen world. It mixes talking head material (many shot in silhouette to protect identities) with more in-depth character examinations - from the twentysomething who lives a double life as both devout Jew and cross-dresser, to the people who try and rid themselves of homosexual thoughts by rubbing themselves with ice.

Consistently fascinating, it provides insight into the ultra-Orthodox lifestyle as well as those struggling for acceptance within it. How it got overlooked in the Documentary category at the Oscars is a mystery.
