Original Title:

Three Musketeers, The

There were versions of Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling classic before Richard Lester took up the challenge, and there have been others since, but none have quite managed to achieve such a brilliantly rip-roaring mix of action, adventure and comedy. Michael York is naively hot-headed D’Artagnan, desperate to become a King’s Musketeer like his father, who gets caught up in a dastardly plot to discredit the reputation of the Queen. It’s exactly what you’d hope from a film where not only do Christopher Lee and Oliver Reed clash swords, but Spike Milligan is married to Raquel Welch. The sequel (The Four Musketeers) is also out, but is flat by comparison.
