Who'd have thunk the life and times of casual popsters Spandau Ballet could be so entertaining? The joy here is stunning archive material, documenting the band’s origins in Thatcher-era Britain, the kilt-wearing breakthrough, the famous True/Gold mainstream success (a Pop Quiz face-off against Duran Duran is priceless) through to the splintering, legal battles and reconciliations. The Spands’ musical significance is overstated (they once rhymed “diplomat” with “laundromat”) and voice-overs lack life, but this is a funny, absorbing, trivia-filled portrait of friendship, the ’80s music biz and bad hair.
