Both movies present men luxuriating in their own insanity, both laugh heartily in the face of repulsion. Based on the case of Mark Yavorsky, who killed his mother with a three-foot sword in the belief he was re-enacting the Greek tragedy Orestes, Herzog reshapes events as a malevolent suburban comedy with random flamingos and lashings of Lynchian unease (Lynch executive-produced). Baffling, unpredictable and overloaded, it’s minor Herzog but major-league weird.
