The trailers would have you believe this is a slam-bang action movie with Dwayne Johnson as a father helping out his jailed son by taking down a drug cartel. Do not believe the hype: it’s really an issues drama about punitive prison sentences and plea deals that occasionally slips into being an action movie. Johnson gives a thoughtful, toned-down performance, but the film’s preachy attitude to drug policy sometimes gets in the way. Still, go in expecting a nuanced thriller with chat favoured over combat, and Snitch is more than up to snuff.
Snitch Review
Happily-married and the owner of a trucking company, John Matthews (Johnson) seems to have things squared-away nicely. But when his son is arrested in a drugs snatch, Matthews is forced into a tough bargain with D.A. Joanne Keeghan (Sarandon) to keep the 19 year-old from a long stretch in jail.
