Playtime

So disparaged on its release that both Jacques Tati's reputation and his finances took a hammering, this lament at the onset of modernity becomes ever more poignant with time, as more of its dire warnings materialise.

Yet despite the pervading melancholy, this is also a majestic creation that compels the viewer to go in search of the gags that litter every frame.

Comedy has rarely been so intricate, incisive and inspired.
