RECENT EVENTS HAVE SUGGESTED the growing confidence of Iranian youth. But while this fascinating celebration of
the sound of resistance reveals the extent to which underground culture, camera phones and the net have taught a generation to kick against the system, this is also a cautionary tale about expecting too much, too soon.
Resembling a mumblecore variation on Half Moon, this whistle-stop survey of the Tehran rock scene centres on Ashkan Koshanejad and Negar Shaghaghi, as they try to organise a covert gig, record an album and make arrangements to play abroad. Bahman Ghobadi can’t be faulted for showcasing so many bands, and the mix is wonderfully eclectic, but the linking episodes aren’t always riveting.
