Letter To Brezhnev

A big success when first released in 1985, this low-budget Brit gem centres on two Liverpool lasses (Alexandra Pigg and Margi Clarke) who pair up with Russian sailors (Peter Firth and Alfred Molina) spending 24 hours on Merseyside.

A quintessential story of love across the divide, it's also a plea for acceptance and tolerance in the face of Cold War hostility. Despite the Iron Curtain now being long gone, the film has sharply-observed and very funny dialogue, plus a wonderful unmannered charm that transcends its slightly archaic setting.
