That the concept of this film — loser gets dream girl, isn’t sure what to do with her — still feels fresh is proof that there remain devastatingly simple ideas that have not yet been mined. Unfortunately, in attempting to turn a premise into a plot, the filmmakers have grafted needlessly nasty gags onto a sweet story.
The script attempts to bring the funny by surrounding our hero, Kirk (Jay Baruchel), and heroine, Molly (Alice Eve), with caustic friends, but forgets to leaven all this sarcasm with charm. There are also signs that the plot has been cut to ribbons and rewoven. Baruchel is good, and Eve okay in a thin role, but the rest of the film is a mish-mash of gross-out gags, a meander that offers few surprises — or, at least, few pleasant ones.
