Colin McLeod (as he is now named) has for centuries hunted former despot and fellow immortal Marcus Octavius, who took the life of his lover in medieval Scotland. In the future, McLeod finds himself in a decimated and submerged New York, where a single monolithic tower now dominates the skyline, imposing tyranny. A band of survivors look to him for salvation, but Mcleod is only out for vengeance.

Seldom has a franchise nosedived like Highlander. Since the cult success of the 1986 original, various attempts at reviving the neat idea of immortals whose only weakness is beheading have been thrust clumsily upon us.
But now, thanks to anime director Yoshiaki Kawajiri (The Animatrix), new life pumps through the franchise’s tired veins. Set in a futuristic New York where Colin MacLeod seeks revenge for his lover’s death, this features enough impressive set-pieces to rekindle our love of the original. The plot and dialogue are stodgy, but there are thrills and bloody spills aplenty.
Despite some clunky storytelling, there's enough visceral action here to revive a franchise long thought dead.
