Pascal Chaumeil's rom-com may have a daft premise — Romain Duris is the séducteur-for-hire paid to break up couples, Vanessa Paradis the rich heiress his latest job — yet his superior debut feature surprises and delights at every turn. A sparkling screenplay that eschews sentiment in favour of a dry wit balanced by expert physical comedy is fleshed out by engaging performances from the two leads, with entertaining support from Julie Ferrier and François Damiens as Duris’ married partners in, if not crime, a somewhat dubious enterprise. Set in the luxuriant locales of Monte Carlo and Paris, yet with true heart at its centre, this is an unexpected joy.

A romantic-comedy that packs charm, humour and warmth in spades.
