Desert Fox

James Mason wears an open-necked shirt and stands up in his tank as everyone’s favourite Nazi, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, in this biopic, which follows Rommel through the last days of the North Africa campaign, his return to a crumbling Germany and the bomb plot against Hitler.

Henry Hathaway was imported to give some American grit to this essentially British war film, which basically says that Rommel wasn’t such a bad sort because he behaved in a very British officerly way about things.

A more than watchable biopic which rewards the enthusiast
