In development for several years now, a new take on teen witch drama The Craft always seemed to be one of those projects more talked about than actually happening, with writers working on drafts but little actual forward motion. Actor/writer/director/producer Zoe Lister-Jones' name has been bandied about recently as being involved in the new movie, with Columbia and the Blumhouse team now making that official.
The Craft, should you have missed it back in 1996, revolved around a quartet of teenage girls (Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, Robin Tunney and Rachel True) dabbling with witchcraft and predictably getting in over their heads. It was not at all bad, and could feasibly have spawned sequels at the time, had not the TV series Charmed come along a couple of years later to somewhat steal its thunder. With Charmed already back on our screens in remixed form, The Craft is finally getting its own chance.
While earlier talk had been of a remake, producer Douglas Wick said in 2016 that the film would actually function more as a sequel, picking up the story two decades hence. There's no word in the new announcement as to what Lister-Jones' angle will be, but she's aboard to write and direct. She's been busy in the last few years expanding her CV with writing and producing alongside acting, working on films such as Band Aid and Lola Versus. Lister-Jones also has a TV show in the works, Woman Up, for which she'll write, produce and direct the pilot.
