John Patrick Shanley might be best known for the dramatic Doubt, but he's also written films such as Moonstruck, Joe Versus The Volcano and, completing the romantic angle... er... Congo. Still, he's back in full lyrical romantic mode for Wild Mountain Thyme, which he adapted from his play Outside Mullingar. See the first trailer, which features Emily Blunt, Jamie Dornan and Jon Hamm.
Anthony (Dornan) always seems to be out in the fields working, worn down by his father’s (Christopher Walken) constant belittling. But what really stings is his father's threat to bequeath the family farm to his American cousin Adam (Hamm). Rosemary (Blunt) at first seems to hold a grudge for having been shamed by Anthony in childhood, but the sparks between them would keep a bonfire blazing through the night. Her mother Aoife (Dearbhla Molloy) strives to unite the families before it is too late.
Just when we think Anthony will pluck up the courage to face up to his repressed feelings, cousin Adam steps in with a plan to sweep Rosemary off her feet, romancing her over a magical 24 hours in Manhattan...
Judging solely from the trailer, the film seems like it could either be a feel good treat or disappear in a miasma of dodgy accents and treacly sentiment. We're hoping for the former! The film has a US release of 11 December but there's no word yet on when it'll hit these shores.
