When James Cameron calls on you, it’s really best to take the job. Or, if you're of a delicate sensibility, cry and run away. That’s another possibility.

But Weta Digital chose the first option and now the people who brought us the spectacle of LOTR and King Kong are working on Cameron’s latest, Avatar.

The epic sci-fi tale of a paraplegic war veteran recruited to help with a strange new alien world doesn’t even have the official go-ahead from 20th Century Fox yet. But that’s no obstacle to the man who made Titanic and Avatar is already thundering through pre-production.

Weta senior VFX supervisor Joe Letteri explained the situation to Variety: "Avatar tells a new kind of story in a world we've never seen before. It demands a whole new set of film-making techniques." And blood. And screaming. Well, it is James Cameron.
