An immigrant story of love

The Joy Luck Club director Wayne Wang is looking for a few good prayers. And he’ll need them, after making Maid In Manhattan. But he’s set his sights on an adaptation of A Thousand Years Of Good Prayers, a collection of stories about life in China and the US by Yiyun Li.

The story will follow a Chinese man who arrives in America to try and save his relationship with his estranged, recently divorced daughter. Problem is, daddy’s little girl can see right through his life, and has realised that his own marriage is a total sham. Still, while trying to bond with his child, the Mandarin-speaking man finds a soul mate in a Farsi-speaking Iranian immigrant, and the two discover that – theme alert! – you don’t need language to cross borders.

Wang plans to start directing the film in October.
