Unlike fellow HBO series Westworld, Damon Lindelof's spin on Watchmen may not be represented by a panel at Comic-Con this year. But that didn't stop the US cable channel from installing a photo booth "activation" in San Diego's Gaslamp District, or launching the new, full-length trailer for the show during the Con on Saturday morning. Take a look...

While the story has largely been a mystery, the new trailer does shed a little more light on the visuals we've been seeing, positing a world where vigilantes are outlawed but even the police find themselves having to use masks to hide their identities after officers are targeted. There are plenty of references to the original Watchmen story and even the appearance of a few familiar faces, including glowing blue powerhouse Dr. Manhattan, who has seemingly been hanging out on Mars since the events of the graphic novel, but has returned to figure out what's happening now.

Not a direct adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' graphic novel, but a new story that treats it as canon history, Watchmen is set the world where superheroes and masked vigilantes are outlaws. Lindelof has said the following about his approach to the source material: "Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted. They will, however, be remixed... This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built... But in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates. It must ask new questions and explore the world through a fresh lens."

The cast for this one includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison and Frances Fisher. It'll be on screens this coming October.
