A Vice Or A Virtue?

Michael Mann sets out to resurrect Miami Vice

There are many dark chapters in human history. Some of these have been explored on screen in an effort to come to terms with the past, others as a caveat to future generations that they not repeat the sins of their forebears. But of all the mistakes made by our species in the pursuit of advancement, the eighties is one of the hardest to stomach. Such crimes against fashion have not been perpetrated since and, God willing, shall never be again but the era is one that will forever mar our history and Michael Mann is going to do his damndest to see we don't forget it. The Ali director will write and produce a big screen adaptation of Miami Vice, the series that saw Don Johnson cavorting around in sockless loafers, pink t-shirt and pastel suit with the sleeves rolled up while partner Tubbs revved up their white Ferrari. Embodying every sartorial sin perpetrated during that ill-fated decade, Miami Vice followed the 'maverick' duo of Crockett and Tubbs as they tore around Florida's city of lights, solving crimes, busting crooks and swinging their shoulder pads for a bunch of g-stringed beach babes. Executive producer on the original series, Mann will drag these eighties icons into the new millennium but don't hold your breath for a decrepit Johnson and Philip Michael getting a long-at-the-back cuts for the film adaptation. Barring the location and basic premise, expect to see an all-new team hitting the Miami streets this time around. Empire Online for one will be thoroughly disappointed however, if they fail to resurrect Jan Hammer's gloriously synthesized theme tune.
