Vice Is Nice At The US Box Office

There’s a new sheriff in town at the US Box Office this week. Two of them, in fact, and they’re called Crockett and Tubbs. Yes, the cops of Miami Vice have finally cracked the ticket-plundering ring run by those Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Opening just ahead of Michael Mann’s last film – Collateral – his re-imagined Vice took in $25.2 million for a decent opening weekend. Still, with a budget around $130 million, it's still got a bit of ground to cover to start shifting into profit.

And Jack Sparrow won’t be worried – Pirates took the number two spot with $20.4 million, bringing its total in the States alone to $358 million, which currently means it’s the 11th highest grossing film of all time in America. And it’s certain to hold on to the title of top earner this year.

Third place went to a surprise entry, as 20th Century Fox’s comedy John Tucker Must Die, about vengeful high school girls, made $14 million going up against the two heavyweights. That’ll please the studio types still trying to recover from the disastrous performance of Ivan Reitman’s My Super Ex-Girlfriend, which dropped out of the charts this weekend like an unlucky former beau thrown by a superheroine.

Fourth was Monster House, which despite a strong opening, has dropped two places and managed just $11.5 million this weekend. But that was still more impressive than Warners’ The Ant Bully, which could only manage a fifth-place start and took in just $8 million. Looks like insects in movies are so 1998…

In sixth we find You, Me And Dupree, which is clinging to a slot in the middle of the charts. Despite being beaten by Little Man at its launch two weekends ago, the Owen Wilson comedy has made more so far, with $59 million compared to the Wayans’ brothers fake-baby-gross-out sitting at eighth with $50 million. Squatting in between those two is Lady In The Water; M Night Shyamalan’s latest has taken $32 million so far.

At ninth place rests one of this year’s big success stories – The Devil Wears Prada. The film crossed the $100 million mark earlier in the week and now stands proud on the catwalk with $106 million. Finally, at 10th there’s Clerks II, with has now made $18.4 million. Hardly blockbuster figures, but it’s already in profit thanks to a healthily low $5 million budget and plenty of overseas sales.

Cleaning up at the box office, one chart at a time….
