Venom: Jenny Slate Will Play A Scientist

The casting for the new Venom film has so far largely relied on the dramatic likes of Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed. But now Jenny Slate – who has long since proven her capability for both comedy and drama roles – is joining the cast.

And unlike most of the casting save Hardy (whom we know is playing journalist Eddie Brock, the man who melds with the alien symbiote and gains its powers at a terrible cost), there is actual word on what she'll be doing in the film, as Variety has heard that she's appearing as a scientist.

Though Venom is one of Spider-Man's most famous antagonists (even if its motivations are not always so clear cut) Sony seems intent that this won't feature the web-slinger, and will boast no Marvel Cinematic Universe connections. Still, the door remains open for them to share the screen down the line.

Ruben Fleischer is directing, working from a script by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, and Sony already has a 5 October, 2018 picked out, so the clock is ticking...
