Oh great, so now we know John Krasinski's take on the Tom Clancy hero Jack Ryan survives his first season on TV. Not that we expected the further adventures to feature Ryan's ghost taking on missions, but Amazon is clearly excited by the series, as it has commissioned a second run of episodes months before the premiere of the first.

This incarnation of Clancy's character sets the action in the present day with Krasinski playing Ryan as a CIA analyst and agent who discovers a pattern of terrorist communication and is thrust into the midst of a dangerous case that has global ramifications.

As with the first season, the second will feature eight more episodes, this time with Ryan confronting the forces in power in a dangerous, declining democratic regime in South America. Creators and Showrunners Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland are back, with shooting set to kick off in the States, Europe and South America. "We're thrilled that the first season has generated so much enthusiasm," says Cuse. "We couldn't be happier to be working with Amazon and to be filming very near the Amazon to tell the next great Jack Ryan adventure."

Wendell Pierce is confirmed to return as Ryan's handler, James Greer, and we'd be shocked if Abbie Cornish didn't show up as Cathy Mueller, AKA Ryan's future wife. Season 1 will be on our screens on 31 August.
