Forget the Oscars, The Golden Raspberry Awards - the ceremony that recognises the truly awful in the world of motion pictures - also took place this weekend. Unsurprisingly, the big 'winner' was John Travolta's abysmal Scientology sci-fi Battlefield Earth. It garnered a massive seven Razzies, tying with the amount presented to Paul Verhoeven's super-bad Showgirls in 1996. As well as being named Worst Movie, Battlefield Earth also received Worst Screenplay and saw Roger Christian named Worst Director. Travolta got Worst Actor (as well as Worst Screen Couple for "anyone sharing the screen with him"), and co-stars Barry Pepper and Kelly Preston were named Worst Supporting Actor and Actress. That didn't leave many awards left to go to non-Battlefield Earth efforts, but a few slipped through. Notably Madonna - Worst Actress for The Next Best Thing and Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 - Worst Sequel. Despite its distinct lack of box-office success, and the seven Razzies, a sequel to Battlefield Earth is in the pipeline.
