Trailers Triumphant

The Fifth Annual Golden Trailer Awards were held on Tuesday Night in Los Angeles, paying tribute to the mini movies that are feature film trailers. Hosted by so-called comedian Tom Green, some of the biggest films of the year (in condensed form) slugged it out for the various awards. The Stepford Wives, which stars Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close and Bette Midler, ran away with most of the plaudits - an event that had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Close was also on the judging panel. The trailer depicts the idyllic and colourful pseudo '50s town of Stepford into which Kidman is immersed, following a breakdown after losing her high profile job. The trailer took Most Original, Summer 2004 Blockbuster and Best of Show Trailers. How do you edit the third book of Tolkien's trilogy into just a few minutes? A truly impossible task for anyone. But somehow, defying the odds, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King managed to pick up the Best Drama award. While, in our opinion, not a patch on the Two Towers trailer, the action sequences are mesmerising with incredible shots of the Nazgul swooping on poor unfortunates, and opulent battle scenes aplenty with magnificent mamukils trampling bods left, right and centre. 21 Grams picked up Best Voice Over, which was read by Sean Penn. In deliciously deep tones, Penn informs us that a person sheds 21 grams upon their death, before plying us with wonderful dinner table trivia such as '21 grams is the same weight as a stack of nickels, or a chocolate bar, or even a humming bird.'
