The first trailer for Duplicity – the espionage movie starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen as ex-spooks falling in love while trying to outsmart one another – has just gone live at Apple… and it looks like it could be smart, stylish and even sexy fun.

Written and directed by Michael Clayton’s Tony Gilroy, it’s a shade or ten lighter than his wonderful Oscar-winning morality play, with plenty of playful sparks between Owen (as ex-MFI agent, Ray Koval; another potential nod to the Bond Owen might have been) and Roberts (as ex-CIA agent, Claire Stenwick) as they try to get their hands on a potentially lucrative formula to… something.

We’re not entirely sure what. It’s a MacGuffin, we’re not really meant to care. All we’re meant to glean from this trailer is: witty banter, exotic locations (Rome looks nice this time of year), sexy stars being suitably sexy and suitably starry, and enough glimpses of a great supporting cast (Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti, scrapping it out – literally – as rival CEOs of big corporations that are behind the MacGuffin) to make us think that Duplicity could be a seriously entertaining ride, like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but without the big guns.

Don’t take our word for it, though. Hie thee to Apple and check it out for yourself.
