Though earlier social media posts by Tom Cruise pointed to the Top Gun sequel – which may or may not end up subtitled Maverick – has already kicked off shooting, the casting process says otherwise. The latest potential addition is Jennifer Connelly, who is now in talks to join the movie.

If she does sign on for sure, Connelly will play a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base where Pete Mitchell (Cruise) tutors pilots. Could he stop by and start crooning You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling?

With Miles Teller already confirmed as the son of Goose, Cruise's late Radar Intercept Officer, the movie is now on the pre-production jump deck, and director Joseph Kosinski will have the cameras rolling in September.

Connelly will next be on the big screen in Alita: Battle Angel, due out on 26 December.
