Well, this could end so very badly. With hope that his character has had his education in a slightly more suitable place than Lynyrd Skynyrd high school, a bunch of tugboats tied together in a junkyard, The Good Place's Manny Jacinto is joining the cast of Top Gun: Maverick.

Deadline reports that Jacinto, who plays dim bulb Jason Mendoza on the sitcom, will be a pilot named Fritz in the sequel to the 1986 film.

Tom Cruise is back as hotshot flyer Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, now teaching the next generation of naval aviators, at a time when drone warfare is seemingly taking over from crewed aircraft.

Joseph Kosinski is on to direct the film, with Val Kilmer back as Iceman and new recruits including Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Miles Teller, Glen Powell and more. Top Gun: Maverick is targeting a 17 July 2020 release in the UK.

As for Jacinto, The Good Place is back for a welcome third season this week and he'll also be seen in Bad Times At The El Royale, due on 12 October.
