Four years since we last saw Tom Waits on screen in Seven Psychopaths, he's finally taken another of his sporadic acting gigs. He'll star in the pilot for a new Hulu series called Citizen, which Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is directing.

According to Deadline the fantasy-crime-drama show takes place in a "supernaturalised" magic-realist Los Angeles and the pilot will be an origin story for some sort of vigilante hero. Waits, in a role that isn't too far from the howlin' mad preacher persona of some of his music, will play a priest called Cesar, who runs an illegal humanitarian operation from a church in Boyle Heights. He hates authority and has plenty of vices that a man of the cloth shouldn't. But he's basically a good guy.

If this seems an odd next move for Me And Earl And The Dying Girl director Gomez-Rejon, bear in mind that before his quirky indie hit he was paying his dues with American Horror Story and a clever remake of The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

Paramount TV and Anonymous Content are joining with Hulu for the Citizen project, which hasn't announced any further cast so far.
