Charting a true-life eco-protest story

He’s normally known for wacky comedies starring Jim Carrey (and, with Evan Almighty arriving, Steve Carrell), but Tom Shadyac is changing gears for a new movie, Planetwalker.

Universal has nabbed the life rights of John Francis who, following an oil tanker crash that destroyed the ecosystem in San Francisco’s Bay in 1971, refused to use motor vehicles and walked the length of America to support environmental issues. Oh, and he also took a vow of silence that lasted for 18 years. Which means this won’t be a gag fest.

Justin Zackham is writing the script and is planning to do his research by reading Francis’ book, also called Planetwalker, and spending time with the man himself during his 1,000 mile canoe trip to unite Inuit tribes in Alaska. And some people think hitting Google is good enough to get a script together…
