Lawyers working for Tom Cruise have threatened legal action over an upcoming book about gays in Hollywood which features one chapter named after the star. According to Cruise's legal team, David Ehrenstein's book, Open Secret: Gay Hollywood 1928-1998, "repeats rumors that our client is homosexual and that the Church of Scientology somehow controls all aspects of his life." The publishers insist the book does not claim Cruise is gay, but instead says rumors about Cruise "are alluded to in the context of the author's commentary" on the star's worldwide appeal to every part of society. Author Ehrenstein was reported as saying, "Here I am declaring that Tom Cruise is straight, and he's still mad at me. What can I do?
