Comedy director tackles religion

Starsky & Hutch director Todd Phillips has signed a “first-look” deal with Warner and agreed to direct The Disassociate for them.

The comedy story involves a man who begins to question his own sanity, after he starts to receive postcards from God. It was written by Zach Helm, the up-and-coming writer of Stranger Than Fiction (being made with Will Ferrell by Marc Forster) and Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium (which Helm himself is, er, helming with Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman).

The two year “first look” deal means that Warners has first refusal on Phillips’ projects. They’re also hoping that his company will produce comedies with “break-out potential”, as well as those he directs. Phillips told Variety, “Warner Bros. is a renowned studio, rich in history and achievement, and I look forward to lowering the bar.”
