Toby Stephens has spent the last few years sailing the high seas in piratical TV drama Black Sails. He's switching to voyaging through the stars for a new project, signing on to play the new John Robinson in Netflix's reboot of Lost In Space.

The new series, which should be on screens in 2018, will follow the basic story of the original show, which sees the spacefaring Robinson family end up stranded light years from their planned destination and far from home, dealing with alien worlds and new creatures as they also combat their own dysfunction.

Taylor Russell will play eldest daughter Judy, while Maxwell Jenkins has scored the role of young son Will. The original series premiered in 1965 and ran for three years, becoming something of a campy cult favourite. The 1998 movie version tried for big-budget drama and... does not enjoy such a warm, nostalgic reputation.

It remains to be seen how the new version works, but Dracula Untold duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless came up with the new take and will work alongside Zack Estrin on the series.

Stephens will next be seen as Tony Blair in The Journey, which has yet to announce a UK release date.
