Those who follow Dwayne Johnson’s pumped up Twitter feed will know that he’s just started shooting the lead in Brett Ratner’s Hercules, in which he will no doubt be putting plenty of sandals to asses. One of those unfortunate rear ends will be Kon-Tiki actor Tobias Santelmann, who is on to play the villain{ =nofollow}.

Ratner’s take on the mythical warrior strips away the supernatural elements, abandoning the myth that Hercules is the son of Zeus. Instead, he’s a mortal warrior with a powerful reputation in battle who works as a roving mercenary with his gang of hard nut types.

When the king of the Thracians hires them to train his men for battle against Santelmann’s revolutionary barbarian Rhesus, our heroes begin to wonder just what their job is about, especially since it seems a lot of innocent people are dying, and we suspect His Rockness is not going to stand for that.

Santelmann joins a cast that also includes Ian McShane, John Hurt, Aksel Hennie, Rebecca Ferguson and Joseph Fiennes. Ratner’s cranking the cameras and is aiming at a July 12, 2014 release date.
