What if everything you thought you knew about the Moon was a big old lie? Or, at the very least, what you thought you knew about the Moon landing missions. Turns out there was something nasty lurking on (or in) that giant rock in the sky and now it's about to endanger everyone on Earth. And who do we have to thank for that? Why, the master of disaster himself, Roland Emmerich, whose Moonfall has a new trailer online.

In the film, mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit and sends it hurtling towards the Earth, promising to end life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former space jockey Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) is convinced she has to key to save us – but only an astronaut from her past (Patrick Wilson's Brian Harper) and conspiracy theorist KC Houseman (John Bradley) believe her. Cue a mission into space, one that leads to a surprising revelation about the moon itself (which, let's be honest, this new trailer and Donald Sutherland's speechifying sort of spoils).

Emmerich wrote this one alongside regular collaborators Spenser Cohen and Harald Kloser, and naturally the moon's big shift leads to social chaos and then destruction on a mass scale as the tides are affected.

Moonfall makes its landing in the US and UK on 4 February.
