Disney was once again reigning at the Stateside box office this weekend, chasing away any potential competition with another of its live-action (or in this case, extensive CGI) films based on stories that it originally turned into animation. This week's example was The Lion King, which arrived with a roar and $185 million in the US, according to studio estimates.

Jon Favreau's latest made $531 million worldwide, meaning that it's already on track to hit the billion mark along with some of its studio stablemates. It also nabbed the best opening ever for a film in July, surpassing Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Nothing new was wide released against it, which meant that the chart below it was only mildly different as movies jockeyed for position below the new ruler.

Spider-Man: Far From Home slipped to second place, adding $21 million in the States and swinging closer to its own worldwide billion mark, crossing $970.7 million. In third, Toy Story 4 took $14.6 million, pushing its domestic total to $375.5 million.

At fourth, we find alligator horror Crawl, which earned $6 million, while Yesterday stayed in place at fifth, making $5.1 million.

Stuber dropped to sixth from fourth, with $4 million, and Aladdin earned $3.8 million in seventh, ahead of Annabelle Comes Home, which scared up $2.6 million.

In ninth, Midsommar took home $1.59 million, while The Secret Life Of Pets 2 dropped to 10th and $1.53 million.

Also making news, while still outside the top 10, was Avengers: Endgame, which has just passed Avatar as the number one film at the all-time box office (not adjusted for inflation, of course)
