Embattled group the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been dealing with issue after issue, called out for its lack of black membership, its complex, limiting membership procedures and any number of scandals through the years. Now, after a wave of criticism from publicists' groups, stars and various media companies, the latest blow: US network NBC has decided not to air the group's awards, the Golden Globes in 2022.
Showing little real progress in truly changing the issues highlighted through the years, the HFPA has been the subject of tough criticism for its exclusionary attitude and financial mismanagement. Now NBC has decided that the Globes ceremony – which, like various other awards shows, suffered a severe ratings dip for its primarily Zoom-based event this year – won't be back for at least a year.
"We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform," NBC said in a statement. "However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023." That remains to be seen: the Globes carries an expensive price tag, and NBC may decide its simply not worth the trouble.
Additionally today, Tom Cruise has made his own protest, returning the Golden Globes he won for Born On The Fourth Of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia to the organization.
