Meanwhile, the Australian version of Mel Gibson is in negotiations to star in an adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel A Tale of Two Cities. It's likely that Gregory Nava will direct. Producer Paula Weinstein has wanted to make the film for several years, but a previous attempt, with Terry Gilliam directing and Liam Neeson starring alongside Madeleine Stowe, was shelved thanks to budgetary concerns. Gibson himself has also been interested in the story for some time - he considered doing it last year when Chinese director Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) was temporarily attached. There's a good chance Gibson will be involved. He's known to be looking for something to keep him occupied until next May, when the delayed production of his latest directing effort, a re-make of Fahrenheit 451, will start shooting.
