Shaft (2019)

If you hire Samuel L. Jackson for your film, and you have the ability to let him loose with the language, you know what you're going to get. The trailer for the latest Shaft movie shows that off with NSFW flair.

Shaft brings together three generations of the cat that won't cop out – Richard Roundtree's original flavour 'tec' from the 1971 original, Jackson's John Shaft II (the Roundtree character's nephew and focus of 2000's reboot that still takes place in the same continuity) and the latest addition, played by Jessie Usher. He's an FBI analyst who plays by much more PC rules than his relatives, but he's going to have to learn that it takes some of the old school style when he asks his dad (Jackson) for help in investigating the mysterious death of his friend in the Harlem underworld.

You wouldn't really get that impression from this latest trailer, which mostly lets the trio spar, trade insults and kick plenty of ass. The film comes from director Tim Story, with a script by Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow. The likes of Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp, and Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man are also all part of the cast. It’s coming to cinemas in America on 14 June – and we’ll be getting it on Netflix on the same date.
