Way back in 2001, a comedy troupe calling themselves Broken Lizard – that would be Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske – launched their second full-length film on the world with Super Troopers. The funny, rude and downright bonkers cop comedy got mixed reviews and only arrived over here in 2002, but has long since become a cult comedy favourite. For years and during press events for their other movies, the team have been asked about a potential sequel and now they’re making one, thanks to a studio deal and a successful crowdfunding campaign, the launch video for which is lurking below.

The original film follows the lackadaisical adventures of five Vermont state troopers, avid pranksters with a knack for screwing up, who try to save their jobs and outdo the local police department by solving a crime. Chandrasekhar directed the movie and all five starred, alongside the likes of Brian Cox.

Launching on Indiegogo on Tuesday, the campaign aimed to drum up $2 million to make the “barebones” version of the sequel screenplay, which will likely pick up not long after the first film finished. As we write this, the fund stands at more than $2.2 million, so the movie will be made, but the team is hoping for more to add extra stunts, scenes and, as they say, “proper actors”.

“Holy shitballs!! In just over 24 hours we hit the first milestone,” reads an update on the site. “If we could cry, we'd be crying. Thank you so much. Sincerely. We can make the skinny version of Super Troopers 2 but I think we all want the muscular version so let's keep going.” If you’re a fan of the original and want to throw in some money, there are a lot of rewards to be had. And if we’re lucky, they might even be able to convince Brian Cox to come back...
