And so it begins: the first major purchase has been made at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City.

Fox Searchlight has opened its coffers to beat out all bidders for Little Miss Sunshine, an offbeat comedy starring Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette and Steve Carell. The company has paid $10 million to scoop the rights to the movie, besting the likes of the Weinstein Company, Focus Features and Miramax.

Little Miss Sunshine follows a quirky family as they travel to the eponymous beauty pageant to fulfil the wishes of their 7-year-old daughter.
