Move over Jack Bauer: there's a new hero in town. Yes, following the news last week that 24: Legacy has been officially commissioned as a spin-off to the terrorism-battling original, word arrives that Straight Outta Compton's Corey Hawkins will be playing main man Eric Carter.

Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer will be, according to Deadline, Sir Not Appearing In This Show, as Sutherland isn't involved for the moment. But original 24 producers Howard Gordon, Manny Koto and Evan Katz are all back alongside director Stephen Hopkins to oversee the series.

Legacy will see Hawkins' Carter as a military man returning from an overseas deployment with trouble following him home. He'll end up asking for assistance from the show's Counter Terrorism Unit to help foil what could be the biggest terror attack on US soil. Other characters include Carter's wife Nicole and a female former head of CTU who is called back to duty with the team. So far, the only reference to people from the original show will be passing mentions in dialogue and pictures on the wall of the agency. Whether Hawkins will end up with a signature declaration to rival Sutherland's "Dammit!" remains to be seen.

Hawkins, who won acclaim for his portrayal of Dr. Dre in Compton, is at work on Kong: Skull Island, which is currently targeting a March 10, 2017 release here and in the States.
