Steve Martin Joins Nancy Meyers Comedy

Usually, it has to be said, Nancy Meyers’ glossy comedies – from Something’s Gotta Give to The Holiday to What Women Want – leave us cold.

But today’s news that Steve Martin has joined the cast of her latest rom-com – a cast that already includes Meryl Streep and the godlike Alec Baldwin – has given us cause to hope.

Little is known about the currently untitled project, save that Martin and Baldwin will play two guys competing for the affections of Streep, it’s produced by Meyers and Scott Rudin, and filming will start in February.

With that cast, it’s clear that this will be a film aimed at more mature cinemagoers, a la Something’s Gotta Give, but we’d hope that this will be more acerbic and, crucially, funnier. Meyers is off to a great start, as we can’t wait to see Baldwin and Martin spar onscreen.

It’ll be the first time that Meyers and Martin will have worked together since the early nineties, when Meyers wrote Father Of The Bride and its sequel. Not the greatest of omens, we’ll admit, but we’ve got a feeling in our bones on this one…
