While he's largely focused on his film career since departing the TV halls of Dunder Mifflin and the Stateside version of The Office, Steve Carell has dabbled in producing small screen shows. Following on from a recent decision to guest star on a series for Apple, though, he's partnering with Office boss Greg Daniels on a new comedy set in a very different sort of workplace, developing and planning to star in Space Force.

The basic concept for this one is inspired by US President Trump's idea of a sixth branch of the military, responsible for defending the country's interests in the cold, hard vacuum of outer space.

Netflix has handed this one a straight-to-series order, and also brokered a rich deal for Carell to star as the show's lead (he's going to recur on the Apple show, but we imagine there might be some schedule juggling). The pair will now focus on assembling a writers' room and figuring out how many episodes to craft for the first season.

Carell appears in Adam McKay's Vice, which arrives on UK screens on 25 January. Daniels has been busy with sci-fi satirical series Upload, which will debut on Amazon's Prime Video this year.
