Steve Carell Is Brigadier Gerard

In a Napoleonic comedy? Er, OK

Steve Carell Is Brigadier Gerard

There are few things funnier than a Napoleonic-era military uniform, so perhaps Steve Carell is on to something with the news that he's signed up to star in** The Adventures of Brigadier Gerard**, a comedy set during the Napoleonic Wars and based on stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Gerard is described by Variety as "the bravest soldier in Napoleon's army and also the dumbest", suggesting that the character has been tweaked slightly from Conan Doyle's original braggart (think Flashman without the low cunning) to more of a buffoon. The film is set to follow him throughout his career at Napoleon's side, from revolutionary War into exile.

Carell's attached to star, but the film is one of several he's considering for spring of next year so might still be pushed back or passed over. He's also juggling a possible Get Smart sequel, and Date Night with Tina Fey. But this one's sufficiently different that it's got to be in with a chance, and coming from the screenwriters of Blades of Glory, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, it has some comedy pedigree. Also, have you seen the hats they used to wear? Hil-arious!
