With the first film based on Stephen King's sprawling Dark Tower stories headed our way this August, those who have never so much as glanced at one of the books or other media might be wondering what it's all about. Here's King plus movie cast members Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey to shed a little light in a featurette.

Elba here plays Roland Deschain, a mysterious ‘Gunslinger’ in an alternative universe known as Mid-World, charged with finding the mythical Dark Tower that will save all existence from extinction. Accompanied by a young boy (Jake Chambers) from our world, the Gunslinger must embark on his quest pursued by the Man in Black (McConaughey).

Suffice to say, the stakes are high for this one, not just in terms of the plot, but also the movie itself. Adapting the Dark Tower series is a challenged that has defeated various filmmakers, but now Nikolaj Arcel has tackled a story that all involved hope will launch a set off films and a potential TV companion series. This first movie is out in the UK on 18 August.
