Twentieth Century Fox execs have confirmed in an interview with the New York Post that they will be restricting the release of next summer's Star Wars prequel in the US and only plan a limited marketing campaign. (You could argue that they don't really need one at all - but there's always the tax write-offs). The newspaper said that the studio has decided to open only on about 2,100 screens, which would limit the initial film's chances of setting a box-office record during its first weekend. Tom Sherak, the company's head of distribution, told the paper, "It's not about the opening weekend. ... The summer goes May to August. We want to enjoy it every step of the way."
