Promising even more action – albeit with a lighter tone – and added Spock, the new season of Star Trek: Discovery is warping its way towards us. And now here's the latest trailer to offer a new taste of the show's return.

While the Klingons are still around with the potential for trouble in the wake of the war's end, the big mystery this year surounds being known as the "Red Angel", a seemingly powerful creature that has been randomly appearing (including to Ethan Peck's Spock) to warn of an apocalyptic future where all sentient life in the galaxy will be wiped out if our heroes don't prevent it. Of course, since Discovery takes place in the years before the half-Vulcan-half-human officer was journeying around space with best pal Captain Kirk, we can assume that it turns out well. But part of the fun is getting there.

New this season is Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, who had command of the Enterprise before Kirk used it as an interstellar hookup service and takes the big chair on Discovery's bridge. We'll also meet Rebecca Romijn as Number One, his first officer.

Alongside the main crew returning, we'll also learn what Michelle Yeoh's alt-universe Philippa Georgiou has been up to with Section 31.

Star Trek: Discovery is back in the States on 17 January via the CBS All Access service, with episodes landing 24 hours later on Netflix in the UK.
