Spotlight (2015)

With the Academy Awards dogged by the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the Independent Spirit Awards set out to add a little more diversity to its nominating field and its winners' circle. So though Spotlight took the main prize, there were trophies for the likes of Idris Elba, Abraham Attah and Tangerine's Mya Taylor.

Spotlight took home the most awards, winning Best Director for Tom McCarthy, who also shared the Screenplay prize with co-writer Josh Singer, Editing for Tom McArdle and the Robert Altman Award for its ensemble.

Elsewhere, Brie Larson won another award for her performance in Room (which also saw Emma Donoghue awarded Best First Screenplay) Marielle Heller took Best First Feature for The Diary Of A Teenage Girl and Ed Lachman won the cinematography prize for Carol.
